Experience and clinical focus
Dr. Hitendra K Garg treats diseases of the digestive system and the liver. His day-to-day work covers acidity and reflux, stomach and bowel problems, pancreas and gallbladder disease, hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis and liver failure. He also performs therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound, and looks after patients before and after liver transplantation.
Before joining Apollo he was Assistant Professor of Hepatology at the Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, for more than four years. He has published more than 20 papers on liver disease in national and international journals, co-authored the APASL consensus recommendations on acute-on-chronic liver failure, and presented in a plenary session of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) in 2009.
He trained in interventional endoscopic ultrasound in Mumbai and in Montreal, Canada, under Prof. Anand Sahai.

Endoscopic removal of a large duodenal polyp
Avoiding open surgery with endoscopic resection.
A patient who had received a kidney transplant had recurrent anaemia, and a stool test showed hidden (occult) blood. An upper GI endoscopy done elsewhere found a large polyp-like lesion, 12 to 15 cm long, filling about two-thirds of the duodenum from its first to third part. He was referred to Apollo Hospital for surgery.
The team led by Dr. Hitendra K Garg assessed the lesion with endoscopy and removed it endoscopically in a procedure that took about five hours. Recovery was uneventful and the patient went home two days later, avoiding the risks of open surgery.
Outcomes vary from person to person. This case is described to explain what endoscopic resection can achieve, not to predict a result for anyone else.
